Cinematography trains students to appreciate the aesthetics and craft of cinematography. Maggie and Tony suspect their spouses of having an affair and arrange to meet at a hotel. They leave their meeting with unsaid possibilities. This was one of our proudest projects even though it was done for our Year 2 Cinematography module. We were required to recreate or adapt a scene from any movie and enhance it with our own creative input. Our inspiration for The World We Knew was the 20-year-old film In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar Wai.
While we rewrote the screenplay, our film stayed true to the original storyline. As the original film was set in the 60s, the production design – from sound design to art direction – had to go back in time. The location had to have an old-world charm. The doors and staircase were not only used to frame our shots and enable performance blocking, but also served as visual metaphors – the staircase denoted the challenge ahead, while the door was a passageway to their imagined affair. We lit the scenes for contrast and saturation, between deep shadows and warm tungsten lights. The wardrobe choice for our talents referenced that of the original leads as well: red for the dress and tie signified love, passion and intensity; the navy blue shoulder bag evoked a sense of sadness; while the green hue that cast over Maggie represented jealousy. For our camera work, we bounced the rack focus back and forth between the talents to enhance the deliberate dialogue between our protagonists.
The objective of this class assignment was to style a product in a visually appealing way. We were not commissioned by any brand and had the freedom to work with any product. I sought inspiration from fragrance commercials and works of prop stylists for my television commercial on Yves Rocher’s shower gel. I focused on art direction and mood lighting, and enhanced the set with effects such as wind and bubbles to stimulate the senses and simulate a relaxing bath experience. I handled the art-direction, filming and editing myself, with the help from some friends on set.
This is a TV commercial on the ARRI 150w tungsten light shot for my advanced cinematography module. We were supposed to take a product and shoot it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. I conceptualised, shot and edited this commercial.
